Perlis State Park (Taman Negeri Perlis)

Location

Perlis State Park is located on the western border of Perlis, meeting the border of Thailand. It is sitting on the longest continuous limestone hills in Malaysia, 36 km long called the Nakawan Range. The park consists of two forest reserve area, Mata Ayer Forest Reserve and Wang Mu Forest Reserve, measuring a total area of 5,000ha.

Overview

The park is surrounded with beautiful, thick lush forest, sheer cliff faces and extensive cave system. The rich and extensive flora and fauna is now being protected and preserve for its biological diversity. Currently it's believed to house more than 600 species of flora, 70 species of mammals, 200 species of birds and 35 reptile species. The main objective of the park is to protect, conserve, research, educate and recreation. It is no surprise that the park is heavily trek by nature lover, be it the day or night trekking along the Prince of Denmark and Rainforest trails. Due to its wide variety of bird species around, there are also many bird lovers whom will camp in the park for a couple of days, dedicating their time for bird watching.
Apart from the forestry and flora and fauna, limestone caves are the unique treasure of Perlis. Recite within the park compound, Wang Burma Cave are amongst the most explore cave. The whole exploration of the labyrinthine routes of Wang Burma Cave will take about 3-4hours, with a lot to see, including the stalactites, bat, centipedes and scorpions. The exploration gets more exciting when you have to squeeze through the narrow muddy tunnels. You can send a night in one of the hotels in Perlis. Although the hotels around are not luxury, but they are clean and comfortable, not forgetting the quiet and serene surrounding.

HISTORY OF PERLIS

Perlis is closely related with and originally was a part of neighbouring state of Kedah. After the Siamese conquered Kedah in 1821, the British, with the intention of securing their interests in nearby Perak, negotiated the 1826 Burney and Low Treaties which resulted in formal relations being established with the Malay states of Kedah and Perak with the kingdom of Siam, their nominal overlord.

However, the exiled Kedah Sultan, Ahmad Tajuddin, was not returned to his throne. Sultan Ahmad and his armed supporters then fought on for his restoration for over twelve years (1830-1842). In 1842, the exiled Sultan finally agreed to accept Siamese terms, and was restored to his throne of Kedah.

However, the Siamese separated Perlis and made it into a separate principality and a vassal to Bangkok. Syed Hussain Jamalulail, of Arab descent and grandson of the Sultan of Kedah, became the first Raja of Perlis. His descendants still rule Perlis, but as Rajas, instead of as Sultans.
With the signing of the Bangkok Agreement between the British and Siamese on 9 July 1909, as with Kedah, the British took control of Perlis.

The first British Resident or advisor to Perlis was Meadow Frost. With the Japanese invasion in 1941, Perlis was returned to Siam by the Japanese as a reward for Siam's
alliance with Japan. This brief annexation ended with the Japanese surrender. After World War II, Perlis returned to British rule until it became part of the Malayan Union, and the Federation of Malaysia in 1957.

Since 2000, the Raja or hereditary monarch has been Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin.

INTRODUCTION

Perlis may be the smallest state in Malaysia, but it boasts a wealth of natural, cultural and historical splendours that rival the bigger states. You may be mesmerised by the many quaint villages, picturesque scenery and centuries-old traditions wherever you go. In short, Perlis is the perfect destination to head for if you prefer old world charm instead of the hustle and bustle of the city, where life is unhurried and the environment naturally fresh and crisp.

Perlis lies at the northwestern tip of the Malay Peninsula; bounded by Thailand in the north, and by Kedah to the east and south. Its western coastline borders the Straits of Melaka. It measures approximately 810 sq km and has a population of 217,480. The state capital is Kangar while Arau, 10km away, is the Royal town.

Although small in size, Perlis is not without its attractions, foremost among which is its serene beauty. Perlis, too, abounds with rustic rural scenes and rolling green fields of padi.

January to April the weather is generally warm and dry. Days are hot and windy but nights can become cold towards dawn. September to December is wet. The average annual rainfall is between 2,000 ml and 2,500 ml (80" to 100") and humidity is high throughout the year. Temperature varies little the year round, ranging from 21° C to 32° C.
